From homemaker to Bhel Queen, from passion to profession and from door-to-door selling to national favourite, here’s a peek at the person and the empire!

Being an amazing chef for her family and whipping up the yummiest snacks was always her passion.What started as a mother wanting to increase the income coming in to the house, she prepared her best snack of all – the dhokla – and headed to a local women’s association. She sold out within minutes!

Word spread, demand increased and our sumptuous delicacies became a hot favourite amongst the people of South Mumbai, Peddar Road specifically. We had a hit on our hands! What initially started as a door-to-door delivery of dhoklas, now had us churning out huge orders from the one room apartment
where a family of 6 lived together.

Overcoming a constant water supply issue, no elevator in the building and only one phone through which she would get all her orders, the passion of our head chef outweighed the obstacles in her path. Her perfectionism, unwillingness to alter traditional recipes and an ever-helpful son, turned this small initiative in to a business.

Bulk orders for dhoklas at weddings and parties held by illustrious families started pouring in. All of them wanted to have heaven on a plate, handmade by the culinary genius herself. Word of mouth played its part and soon an average of 60-70 kilos of food would be made in the kitchen each day.

When she became the unparalleled Dhokla Queen of Mumbai in 1996, she shifted her focus to bhel that was a lot less taxing and much faster selling. That too became an instant success, because of its deliciousness and ease of transportation. People from across the country started sending in orders.

As the business expanded, her son Pratik even chose to give up his top job at a CA firm and became her right hand in growing this snacks empire. Slowly and steadily, the business moved out of the one-room house. It is now present in outlets across the city and the shelves of major grocery stores and supermarkets.

What started off as a small family owned business is now a family favourite among so many households across the country and even the world. For so many people, we are synonymous with the most delicious Guajarati snacks you will ever eat. And all of this was possible only because of the pure grit, vision and enthusiasm of one lady: Mrs. Nila Mehta. She did what she loved and put love in everything she cooked!
